Have you been told by your GP or NHS dermatologist that your cyst cannot be treated on NHS? You’re not alone. Many people in Glasgow experience cysts that, while harmless, can result in discomfort, cosmetic issues, or unpleasant discharge. Yet under current NHS guidelines, removal often isn’t routinely offered. So, what can you do?
As Glasgow Skin Specialists prepares to open a HIS-compliant private clinic in Glasgow, we’re building resources to help patients understand their options—including private cyst removal.
Why the NHS may not remove your cyst
Most skin cysts, which include pilar cysts and sebaceous cysts, are benign and don’t usually need treatment. As a result, NHS removal is typically reserved for cysts that are recurrently infected or inflamed or causing functional problems (e.g. pain or discomfort). Unfortunately, cysts that are simply cosmetically concerning, even when located on the face, often don’t qualify for referral. In Glasgow, most GP practices and hospital specialities no longer offer minor surgery, and benign skin lesions need to be referred through the Exceptional Referral Protocol (ERP). These referrals are not subject to the 18 Weeks Referral to Treatment Standard, and, if accepted for treatment, the waiting time to receive an outpatient appointment can be well over a year, and then a similar wait for the operation.
