What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a common condition that causes dry, flaky and sometimes itchy or painful patches of skin. The patches may look pink or red with silvery scale on lighter skin, and grey, purple or dark brown on brown or black skin. Psoriasis can also affect the scalp, skin folds and nails.

It is a long-term condition that often varies over time, with periods when symptoms improve and periods of flare-up. Psoriasis is linked to the immune system and is not contagious, so it cannot be caught from or passed to another person.

There is no permanent cure, but treatment can help control symptoms. The right treatment depends on the type of psoriasis, where it appears, how extensive it is and how it affects you.

psoriasis affects your scalp, nails or skin folds;
-
current treatment has stopped working or causes side effects;

What happens at your dermatology consultation?
01
Understand your symptoms
Your dermatologist will ask when the problem began, how it has changed, what may trigger it and how it affects your daily life.
02
Examine the affected area
They will examine your skin, scalp or hair as appropriate and review relevant medical history, medication and previous treatment.
03
Explain the likely diagnosis
In many cases a diagnosis can be made during the consultation. If further investigation is needed, your dermatologist will explain why.
04
Agree a plan
You will receive an individual management plan, which may include practical advice, prescription treatment, monitoring or follow-up.
How can acne be treated?
Treatment may include:

-
emollients and appropriate skincare;
-
topical corticosteroids;
-
vitamin D-based topical treatments;
-
other treatments for the skin, scalp or nails; or
-
onward referral for light treatment or systemic medicines where these are required.
-

Some people need a combination of treatments. Your dermatologist will explain how to use treatment safely and when it should be reviewed.

Seek urgent medical help
Seek urgent medical help if your skin rapidly becomes red or discoloured and develops widespread pus-filled spots, particularly if you also have a high temperature, shivering or feel unwell.
