What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face. Early symptoms may include flushing across the cheeks, nose, forehead or chin, as well as burning or stinging when using water or skincare products.

Some people develop persistent redness or colour change, visible small blood vessels, dry or swollen skin, or acne-like bumps and spots. Redness can be less obvious on brown or black skin. Rosacea can sometimes affect the eyes and eyelids.

Rosacea cannot currently be cured, but treatment can help control symptoms. Common triggers include sunlight, temperature changes, alcohol, spicy foods, hot drinks, exercise and stress, although triggers vary from person to person.
When might a dermatologist appointment help?
-
you have persistent facial flushing, redness or colour change;
-
your face burns, stings or reacts to skincare products;
-
you have spots that may be acne, rosacea or another condition;
-
pharmacy or GP treatment has not controlled your symptoms;
-
symptoms are becoming more frequent or severe; or
-
the condition is affecting confidence or daily life.
What happens at your dermatology consultation?
01
Understand your symptoms
Your dermatologist will ask when the problem began, how it has changed, what may trigger it and how it affects your daily life.
02
Examine the affected area
They will examine your skin, scalp or hair as appropriate and review relevant medical history, medication and previous treatment.
03
Explain the likely diagnosis
In many cases a diagnosis can be made during the consultation. If further investigation is needed, your dermatologist will explain why.
04
Agree a plan
You will receive an individual management plan, which may include practical advice, prescription treatment, monitoring or follow-up.
How can rosacea be treated?
Your treatment plan may include:

-
advice on recognising and reducing personal triggers;
-
gentle skincare and daily sun protection;
-
prescription creams or gels;
-
oral antibiotics for some forms of rosacea; or
-
onward referral where another form of treatment is needed.

Different treatments address different features of rosacea. Your dermatologist will explain which symptoms a treatment is intended to improve and how long it may take to work.
