Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in Scotland. Fortunately, most skin cancers can be fully treated with surgery, especially if removed early. At Glasgow Skin Specialists, our medical staff are experts in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, and can offer rapid and high-quality surgery, to give you the best possible outcome without long delays.
Skin Cancer Rates are Rising in the UK
Skin Cancer rates are rising sharply in the UK. Cancer Research UK has found a 169% increase of non-melanoma skin cancer between 1993-1995 to 2016-2018. The incidence rates have increased across all age groups, with the most significant rises observed in older populations. By 2038-2040, annual non-melonoma skin cancer cases are projected to exceed 262,000, a 39% increase from 2023-2025 figures.
There are approximately 17,500 new melanoma cases diagnosed each year in the UK, making it the fifth most common cancer. Among adults aged 55 and over, incidence rates have rises by about 147%, with a 31% increase over the last decade alone. By 2040, annual melanoma cases are projected to increase by 50% from current figures.
