What is acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that can cause blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed spots and oily skin. Some people develop deeper, painful nodules or cysts. It most often affects the face, but it can also involve the chest and back.

Acne is not caused by poor hygiene and it is not contagious. Hormones, family history, some medicines and certain products may all play a part. Picking or squeezing spots can make inflammation worse and increase the risk of permanent scarring.

Although acne cannot always be permanently cured, it can usually be controlled with an appropriate treatment plan. Treatment often takes time to work and may need to be adjusted as your skin responds.

Understand your symptoms
Your dermatologist will ask when the problem began, how it has changed, what may trigger it and how it affects your daily life.

Examine the affected area
They will examine your skin, scalp or hair as appropriate and review relevant medical history, medication and previous treatment.

Explain the likely diagnosis
In many cases a diagnosis can be made during the consultation. If further investigation is needed, your dermatologist will explain why.

Agree a plan
​You will receive an individual management plan, which may include practical advice, prescription treatment, monitoring or follow-up.
How can acne be treated?
Treatment depends on the type and severity of acne, whether there is scarring and what you have already tried. Options may include:

advice on suitable skincare and non-comedogenic products;

topical treatments applied to the affected skin;

oral antibiotics used with an appropriate topical treatment;

hormonal treatment for some women; or
-
other specialist treatment where clinically appropriate.

Your dermatologist will explain how long treatment may take, possible side effects and what monitoring is needed. If a recommended treatment requires blood tests, pregnancy testing, contraception measures or regular review, these requirements and costs will be explained before treatment begins.

Treatment costs
Blood tests, pregnancy tests, prescriptions and follow-up consultations are not included in the initial consultation fee. The number of appointments required depends on the treatment selected and your individual circumstances.

Initial consultations are priced at £220. The consultation includes specialist assessment and an individual management plan. Medication, investigations, procedures and follow-up appointments are charged separately where required. Any additional costs will be explained before you decide how to proceed.
