Hair Loss and Alopecia Assessment in Glasgow
Hair loss can have many causes and may appear as increased shedding, gradual thinning, bald patches or changes to the scalp. At Glasgow Skin Specialists, our consultant dermatologists assess hair loss and alopecia, explain the likely cause and discuss appropriate treatment or investigation.

What causes hair loss?
Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. Some hair loss is temporary, while other types are longer term. It can be linked to hereditary pattern hair loss, autoimmune conditions, illness, stress, weight loss, iron deficiency, hormonal change, medication or inflammation affecting the scalp.

Because hair loss is not a single condition, identifying the likely cause is an important first step. A dermatologist will consider the pattern and speed of hair loss, the condition of the scalp, other symptoms, medical history and relevant family history.

Hair loss can be upsetting and may have a significant effect on confidence and wellbeing. Treatment may help with some causes, but no treatment is effective for every type of hair loss.
When might a dermatologist appointment help?
-
you are shedding more hair than usual;
-
your hair is gradually thinning or your parting is widening;
-
you have developed one or more bald patches;
-
hair loss is sudden, rapidly progressing or accompanied by scalp symptoms;
-
you are uncertain about the cause; or
-
hair loss is affecting your confidence or wellbeing.
What happens at your dermatology consultation?
01
Understand your symptoms
Your dermatologist will ask when the problem began, how it has changed, what may trigger it and how it affects your daily life.
02
Examine the affected area
They will examine your skin, scalp or hair as appropriate and review relevant medical history, medication and previous treatment.
03
Explain the likely diagnosis
In many cases a diagnosis can be made during the consultation. If further investigation is needed, your dermatologist will explain why.
04
Agree a plan
You will receive an individual management plan, which may include practical advice, prescription treatment, monitoring or follow-up.
How can hair loss be treated?
Treatment depends entirely on the cause. Depending on the diagnosis, options may include:

-
treatment of an underlying scalp condition;
-
topical or oral medication;
-
steroid treatment for some inflammatory or autoimmune forms of hair loss;
-
investigation and treatment of an underlying medical or nutritional cause; or
-
monitoring, practical advice or onward referral.
-

Your dermatologist will explain the realistic aims of treatment, possible side effects and whether ongoing treatment is needed to maintain benefit.
