What is eczema?
Eczema is a condition that causes the skin to become dry, itchy and inflamed. Atopic eczema - also called atopic dermatitis - is one of the most common forms, although several different conditions can cause eczema-like symptoms.

Symptoms can range from small areas of dry or irritated skin to more widespread inflammation. The skin may itch, crack, blister or bleed, and symptoms often vary over time, with periods when the condition improves and periods of flare-up.

Atopic eczema cannot currently be cured, but appropriate treatment can help control symptoms, reduce flare-ups and protect the skin. Because different skin conditions can look similar, an accurate diagnosis is an important first step.

Understand your symptoms
Your dermatologist will ask when the problem began, how it has changed, what may trigger it and how it affects your daily life.

Examine the affected area
They will examine your skin, scalp or hair as appropriate and review relevant medical history, medication and previous treatment.

Explain the likely diagnosis
In many cases a diagnosis can be made during the consultation. If further investigation is needed, your dermatologist will explain why.

Agree a plan
​You will receive an individual management plan, which may include practical advice, prescription treatment, monitoring or follow-up.
How can eczema be treated?
Treatment depends on the type and severity of eczema, which areas are affected and what you have already tried. Your dermatologist may recommend:

advice on washing, skincare and reducing contact with irritants;

regular use of emollients to moisturise and protect the skin;

topical corticosteroids of an appropriate strength;

other topical prescription treatments;

treatment for infection, where clinically indicated; or
-
review or onward referral where more specialist investigation or treatment is required.

Your dermatologist will explain how to use any treatment safely, what improvement you should expect and when the treatment should be reviewed.

Seek urgent medical advice
Seek urgent medical advice if your skin becomes rapidly worse, painful, warm or swollen, starts blistering or leaking fluid, or you feel generally unwell. These can be signs of infection or a more serious complication.
